In 1975 I was accepted to Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago, and in fact Chicago became my second home for the next 12 years. When I was in the residency program in orthodontics in 1980, the gold and silver market was in a major bull market. I had saved about $5,000 up to that point, so I opened a $5,000 account. Between 1980 and early 1983 I probably made every one of the mistakes that you can imagine and lost more than $30,000 in trading. But it was a blessing in disguise. Why? Because I learned from my mistakes and try not to repeat them. A breakthrough came one day in May 1983. I saw an announcement placed by someone named Mike Chalek selling a trading program. Mike lived only 10 miles from me so I went over to see him. Mike told me that he was an engineer with Bell Laboratories and that he programmed technical trading systems as a hobby. He had done extensive programming work in the past for Larry Williams. After some thought, I bought Mike's program. The program itself was a springboard to success. Mike and I became close friends and we would enjoy many weekends working together testing ideas. After getting this program tested on historical markets with good results, I was ready to put it to the real test of real time trading.
